While you're in South Dakota for St. Joseph's 32nd Annual Children's Powwow, plan to take a Lakota History Tour, offered by Native Discovery!

You are cordially invited to tour with us, September 15 - 18, 2008 through central South Dakota to learn about the Lakota people, their history, culture and traditions.

Begin the Lakota History Tour in Chamberlain, at the Akta Lakota Museum at St. Joseph's Indian School. Travel along the Native American Scenic Byway, which winds along the Missouri River. Enjoy the picturesque scenery of the river bluffs and rolling prairies of central South Dakota.

The tour will take you through the lands of the Crow Creek, Lower Brule and Cheyenne River Indian Reservations where you'll learn about the rich history and culture of the people who live here. On the tour, you'll visit places noted in the journals of Lewis and Clark. Next, you'll see sites from an excursion boat on the waters of the Missouri River. Professional guides will share historical stories and current events.

Wildlife is abundant here, and while on the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit herds of buffalo and wild horses living on the Cheyenne River Reservation. We'll take you on a western adventure as well! Enjoy a chuck wagon cookout and wagon rides at a local ranch. Area attractions are also on the agenda, including interpretive centers and museums.

When the sun goes down, you will spend the night in a local motel. To wind down in the evenings, we'll sit around the campfire and hear presentations from local story tellers who will share experiences and beliefs about the Lakota way of life. We'll also have time to meet artists, see locally produced artwork and shop in area stores.

As the tour comes to a close, you'll have an opportunity to learn more about Lakota spirituality and the meanings behind many of the ceremonies the Lakota participate in.
